Hispaniola
Hispaniola’s environmental history is an unhappy one, with once-dense forests gone from 90 percent of the Dominican Republic on the island’s eastern two-thirds, and Haiti, on the rest, essentially barren, with little environmental consciousness evident in either.
Problems include overfishing, coral reef degradation, urban encroachment, water pollution, and poaching of species supposedly protected (illegally killed sea turtles are common restaurant fare).
Yet even here are beautiful remnants.
