Lake Nakuru National Park

More than a million (at peak, two million) flamingos can turn shores and alkaline waters pink when they gather in stupendous numbers to consume blue-green algae in Lake Nakuru. There are more than 400 other bird species as well—sometimes large gatherings of white pelicans— and among mammals, rare white and black rhinos, leopards, hippos, waterbucks, reedbucks, and klipspringers, and (introduced) Rothschild’s giraffes. Flamingo numbers depend on algae which depends on weather and water conditions—but natural life is always abundant and interesting. There are lodges and campsites, 97 miles (157 km) drive from Nairobi.
