Zambia

Glowing carmine bee-eaters can cover riverbanks in the Luangwa Valley, watched from below by more Nile crocodiles than anyplace else (including the Nile).

This vast landlocked plateau, green and dotted with lakes, crisscrossed by the great Zambezi, Kafue, and Luangwa rivers with their hundreds of tributaries, oxbows, and lagoons, holds 45 percent of all the water in southern Africa. As a result, Zambia’s national parks, some of the largest on the continent, harbor some of the greatest wildlife concentrations in the world.
